Synoptyczne uwarunkowania dni ekstremalnych pod względem termicznym w Małopolsce w drugiej połowie XX wieku
(Synoptic conditions of the thermal extreme days in Małopolska in the second half of the 20th century )

Łupikasza E., Bielec-Bąkowska Z., 2004-2005, Synoptyczne uwarunkowania dni ekstremalnych pod względem termicznym w Małopolsce w drugiej połowie XX wieku, Folia Geographica ser. Geographica-Physica, vol. XXXV-XXXVI (35-36): 93-112 (in polish).

Keywords: extreme air temperature, climate extremes indices, climate changes, synoptic situations, climate of Małopolska

Summary: One of the most crucial problems of contemporary climatology is to reply to the questions about quantity, direction of tendency and causes of climate change. The need for detailed analysis of extreme climatic thermal events in local scale and their explanation is signalled in ECA reports (Klein Tank, Wijngaard 2000) or IPCC reports (2001). Therefore, the main aim of this paper is determination of synoptic conditions of the occurrence of extreme thermal days in Małopolska region. Moreover, as a supplement to the results obtained by other scientists (Hess et al. 1989; Limanówka 1991; Morawska-Horowska 1991; Mroczka 1992; Niedźwiedź et al. 1994-1995; Kozłowska-Szczęsna 1997; Kossowska-Cezak 2003) the trends of multiannual course of selected extreme thermal indices in Małopolska Province were also analysed. A general background of the discussed thermal characteristics was presented through the analysis of their annual values, seasonal distribution and annual course. The daily values of maximum and minimum air temperature of the period 1951-2000 from six meteorological stations (Kraków, Tarnów, Zakopane, Aleksandrowice, Kasprowy Wierch, Nowy Sącz - here for the period 1954-2000) situated in majority in the Małopolska Province were used. In order to define thermal extreme conditions the indices selected from many other indices of extreme climatic events proposed by ECA (European Climate Assessment) were used (Frich et al. 2002). They include diurnal temperature range (DTR) defined as a difference between the highest and the lowest temperature recorded during 24 hours, extreme temperature range (ETR) defined as a difference between e.g. annual, seasonal or monthly absolute maximum temperature and absolute minimum temperature, and the indices of heat wave duration (HWDI) and cold wave duration (CWDI). The last two indices used in this work are defined by the longest number of following after each other days during a year when maximum temperature was higher than its diurnal standards for the period 1961-1990 adding 5oC (HWDI) and when minimum temperature was lower than its diurnal standard for the period 1961-1990 reducing 5oC (CWDI).
The results of the investigation showed, that in Małopolska, diurnal temperature range (DTR) is slightly higher during anticyclonic circulation types. It shows the highest values in situations Swa, Sa, Ca and Ka. The occurrence of extreme hot days is less connected with the type of barometric pattern, but the direction of air mass flow is more important. Such days occur usually in Małopolska when air flows from south-western sector and during the occurrence of Ka and Bc situation. They occur extremely rarely during the air flow from the south and east. Both, during the whole year and in the individual seasons, the occurrence of extreme cold days reveals, as opposed to extreme hot days, a clear relationship with the type of barometric pattern. These days usually occur in anticyclonic situations, which is especially visible in summer and autumn. In most of the stations studied apart of Kasprowy Wierch, extreme cold days usually occur in situations Ka, Ea, SEa and Ca.
