Influence of forest on snowmelt runoff in small highland basins in Slovakia.

Miklanek P., Pekarova P., 2006-2007, Influence of forest on snowmelt runoff in small highland basins in Slovakia., Folia Geographica ser. Geographica-Physica, vol. XXXVII-XXXVIII (37-38): 53-64.

Keywords: experimental basin Rybárik and Lesný, snowmelt 2006, runoff formation

Summary: The 40-year series of measurements of maximum annual discharges in two experimental microbasins of the Institute of Hydrology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences: the forested basin of Lesný (0.0864 sq km, hornbeam) and the agricultural basin of Rybárik (0.119 sq km) were evaluated. These two neighbouring basins are in the same orographic conditions and the hydrological conditions can be considered as homogeneous. Particular attention was given to analysis of the runoff formation in both basins during the 2006 snowmelt flood. The analysis of the maximum annual discharge series has shown that during extraordinary extreme snowmelt floods the impact of vegetation on peak flows transformation was minimal. Generally, the extreme mean daily winter-spring specific yields in the forested basin were only 66.5% of the extreme daily specific yield in the agricultural basin. In 2006 - during extreme runoff situation - it was up to 93.2%. In 2006 the peak specific yield was even higher in the forested basin than in the agricultural one.
