Zarys treści w języku angielskim: The geomorphic consequences of the reactivation of erosion processes in a permanent gully located in the Daugava River Valley (southeastern Latvia) were studied in relation to an extreme rainfall and hydrological event in May 2005. This particular fluvial form is an old gully covered in its lower reaches by broadleaf forest. Results obtained during field studies and analysis of meteorological and hydrological data show that an extreme rainfall event, with a maximum intensity on May 10, 2005, triggered floods in southeastern Latvia as well as the reactivation of erosion processes in stream channels. The formation of 0.8-1.1 m deep incisions and landslides in old woodland gullies demonstrated the possibility of reactivation of geomorphic processes caused by the cumulative erosive effect of peak runoff and flash flooding resulting from natural damming of a gully by landslides when the impounded pond water level rises and rapidly breaches the dam. However, these facts do not tie in with the opinions expressed in many research papers, that vegetation cover controls erosion and increases slope stability within gully channels. Hence, geomorphological studies of changes in permanent gullies associated with the reactivation of erosion are of significance for the purpose of generating new knowledge about contemporary erosion events and their controlling factors. Such studies are designed to lead to a better understanding of various forcing-response mechanisms of small catchments to extreme hydrometeorological events, as well as to determine the possible impact of environmental change on low order streams.
