Summary: Global changes (i.e. combined climate and land use changes) are expected to induce significant changes in climate and hydrological regimes in urban areas, producing flash floods that may damage property, lead to the loss of human life, and significantly alter pollutant transport and dispersion patterns. Flash floods occur mainly in small urban catchments. In addition to producing global climate change, urbanization produces significant climate changes over cities. This will further contribute to existing climate change tendencies whose impact on extreme rainfall events is not well understood. An experimental system was set up to investigate the impact of global change with particular emphasis on extreme rainfall events. With this purpose in mind, an extensive meteorological network was installed in the city of Coimbra and surrounding rural areas. The impact of specific urban climate characteristics will be assessed for different weather conditions. In addition to being influenced by climate change, urban hydrology is influenced by land use changes. Land use is assessed using high resolution remote sensing data that is fed into a GIS database. A hydrological network was installed in order to monitor selected catchment response patterns. This paper describes the analytical approach and experimental set up used in the project. It also presents the first monitoring and modelling results generated in the Ribeira dos Cov?es experimental catchment.
