Summary: Geomorphological mapping was carried out in the Korycianka catchment. Basing on this investigation three valley types, differing in terms of their morphology, were identified. These are: the valleys with permanent channels and wide flat bottoms, the dry trough-like valleys and the road gullies.
The valleys of the first type are the largest (several kilometers in length, tens of meters in depth); along their longitudinal profile reaches of varied morphology can be distinguished.
The bottoms are periodically flooded. On the sides of these valleys there are flat surfaces, which probably are the fragments of Pleistocene terraces. The sides are asymmetric. The origin of asymmetry is probably complex. All the slopes in the catchment are dissected by the trough-like valleys - the second type of valleys. In the bottoms of the largest trough-like valleys, there are the drainage ditches. Most valleys of this type were formed in Pleistocene and have asymmetric sides. The asymmetry is a result of solifluction process, modifying the sides in periglacial climate. In comparison with the trough-like valleys, which occur on the right of the first type valleys (e.g. on the less steep slopes), the trough-like valleys situated on the left of the first type valleys (e.g. on the more steep slopes) are more numerous, shorter, deeper, and the inclinations of their sides are greater. Third type of valleys are the road gullies - the anthropogenic forms which dissect the hilltops, slopes and valley bottoms. They were formed as a result of incision of often used ground roads. Nowadays the road gullies are the most intensively transformed valleys.
The sediments filling valleys of the first and second types were subjected to detailed analysis. Basing on these investigations and using archaeological materials an attempt at a thorough study of Holocene valley transformation in the Korycianka catchment was made.
The relief transformation, which took place in Holocene, was mostly due to changing climate conditions. The most important climate changes took place at the turn of the Vistulian, at the turn of the Atlantic period and at the beginning of the Subatlantic period. In these periods the intensive denudation of the loess slopes and accumulation of material in the valley bottoms were predominant. Due to these processes, the valleys became shallow and the shape, length and inclination of their sides changed. Additionally, new landforms appeared: small trough and road gullies. Since the Atlantic period these processes were intensified by the settlements and activities of people of various cultures, who caused significant deforestation.
The Holocene valley transformation in the Korycianka catchment probably took a similar course as in other areas of the Proszowicki Plateau. It is revealed by the similarity of the valley formation, the identity of the sediment sequence in profiles of the valley bottoms and the common history of the settlements in the whole region.
