Summary: The author used daily measurements and observations from the Research Station of the Climatology Department, Institute of Geography and Spatial Management, Jagiellonian University in Gaik-Brzezowa and the calendar of synoptic situations by T. Niedźwiedź (2003). The Gaik-Brzezowa station is located in the moderately warm climatic zone about 25 kilometres south-east of Cracow. The data included the number of days with snowfall (>=0.1 mm and >=10 mm) and the snowfall totals in the cold season (November through April) over the period 1971-2000. A day with a snowfall is defined as a day (6 AM-6 AM UTC) when a snowfall or mixed precipitation including snow was recorded. Mixed precipitation was split in half between snowfall and rainfall.
The analysis of the long-term series of Gaik-Brzezowa has shown the various facets of snowfall variability conditioned by the synoptic situation and mean daily value of air temperature. It was proven that snowfall accounts for much of the total precipitation (40%). The seasons 1975/76-1981/82, 1995/96 and 1999/00 recorded the heaviest snowfall, while the minimum snowfall was recorded in 1989/90 and 1997/98. Of the 21 synoptic situations, snowfall occurred most frequently under cyclonic situations. Nearly 33 per cent of days with snowfall occurred in three cyclonic situations: western advection (Wc), north-western (NWc) and cyclonic trough (Bc). The maximum probability of snowfall is related to cyclonic situation from north-east (NEc). Snowfall appears at the daily air temperature form -20.0oC to +12.3oC. Most of it (79%) occur in the interval of air temperature between -5 and 5oC.
