The transformations of the cultural landscape in the eastern part of the Beskid Niski
Summary: The paper is an attempt at presenting the transformations of the cultural lanscape in the eastern part of the Beskid Niski mountain range. Throughout the centuries there has developed here a special area of cultural borderline, whose particular feature was the merger of different rites and denominations. Therefore, most emphasis is laid on ecclesiastical buildings as the elements predominating the cultural landscape. Together with the first settlers, there appeared material evidence of their religion. From the beginning of the eighteenth century till the 1920s and 1930s, the cultural lanscape, viewed from the aspect of religious variety, did not undergo any serious alterations. The area discussed in the present study was inhabited prevailingly by the faithful of Eastern rites, which to a large extent was the effect of the settlements of the so-called Valachian-Ruthenian colonisation. The settlers populated mountainous regions, where husbandry was more difficult. Roman Catholic churches were situated in towns and on the borders of the areas inhabited by Ruthenians. Additionally, this cultural mosaic was enriched by the admixture of the confessors of Judaism (Jews), who appeared in the discussed region in the seventeenth century. The end of this exceptional cultural territory was marked by the events of the Second World War and the subsequent resettlements of the Rusyn population. The synagogues in Dukla and Rymanów fell into ruin. Some of the deserted Eastern rites churches were adapted as Catholic churches, some of them were destroyed, and some others fulfilled various functions, e.g. served as storage houses. In the second half of the twentieth century the cultural lanscape was changed by the prayer houses of the newly arrived Pentecostals. Some of the resettled Rusyns returned and have started to use several of their churches again. In the modern lanscape there are Roman Catholic churches, Orthodox and Uniate churches as well as Pentecostalist prayer houses. These buildings are used for religious purposes. The former presence of Jews, who once contributed to the creation of this special cultural conglomerate, is confirmed only by the ruins of synagogues. Previously the landscape was dominated by churches of the Eastern rites, while nowadays more Catholic churches are in use. For some time an exotic element in the religious landscape of the eastern part of Beskid Niski was the prayer houses of the Pentecostals, but gradually they also became its typical feature. The cultural landscape of this part of the Carpathians is still subject to incessant change both in time and space. Although modern culture is characterised by the trend which aims at levelling all the differences, the Beskid Niski continues to be a cultural borderline, however, sometimes only because of the remaining material evidence.
