Paintings related to Our Lady from the territories of Eastern Poland
Summary: Following the WW II and the Yalta Agreement, when the Polish population of the eastern territories was forced to leave their land, along with their modest possessions they also took on their long and uncertain exodus objects which symbolised their attachment to their homeland. Among these, special importance was attached to objects of religious cult, such as paintings of Our Lady. The people did not take much material from the rich heritage that had accumulated through the centuries, but what was taken often had high artistic and historical value. This was done with considerable effort, dedication and also, sometimes, at a risk to life. This was mainly performed by the clergy, but also by lay people. The importance of those activities is confirmed by the known collections that have not been saved: they went missing, were destroyed, or fell into other hands, and nobody knows whether they will ever be recovered. The attachment of these people to their 'own' images of St Mary may be judged by the geographical distribution of these pictures, which even now, many years later, still recall associations with the original place these people had to leave. The wartime and post-war history of those paintings has been as varied as that of the people themselves. Often, taking a picture out of its original church was made very difficult by the new Soviet authorities. Such difficulties would be overcome in different ways - sometimes it would involve a risk to life and on other occasions, as also happened, just a bottle of 'moonshine'. In most cases, the paintings, carefully packaged and hidden, went on the trains with the displaced population, accompanied by their priests. Sometimes the congregation and the painting would go separate ways. This would normally take place when, for fear of damage, theft or confiscation, a painting would be taken to a safe place even before the departure of the community. Of the total number of the paintings transferred in this manner, 99 came from the Lwów diocese, 12 from the Łuck diocese and 8 from that of Przemyśl. The largest number are now to be found in south-western Poland (31 in the Wrocław archdiocese, 9 in the Legnica diocese,13 in the Opole diocese and 3 in that of Gliwice), 10 are to be seen in Lubaczów and the surrounding area, a few ended up in the churches of Warsaw, Kraków and Gdańsk, and the rest are scattered throughout the country. It is feasible that some of the paintings brought into the modern boundaries of Poland have not yet been identified or revealed. The list drawn up by the author contains 119 paintings of St Mary, together with information about their history, which were brought into Poland from its former eastern territories.
