Badania terenowe w geoekologii - przejściowy kryzys czy trwała zmiana metodologii? Refleksje w świetle prezentacji przedstawionych na konferencji "Rola badań terenowych w studiach krajobrazowych XXI wieku" Field studies in landscape ecology - temporary crisis or a permanent revision of methodology? Reflections against the speeches referred at "The Role of Field Studies in Landscape Research of 21th century" Abstract: The paper presents - on the background of the landscape ecology evolution - the author's opinion on current situation of field studies in the research process of Polish landscape ecology studies. This opinion is that landscape ecological knowledge is a too unique intellectual resource to be wasted for carrying out field studies concerning particular environmental components. Landscape ecologists should be mainly engaged in performing landscape synthesis for applications and scientific purposes. Uniqueness of landscape ecology should base on capability of the discipline to interdisciplinary synthesize specific knowledge in cooperation with other sciences, but without prevalence of one's methodology and methods. There are three main causes of desktop studies development in two last decades: (1) the growth in use of computer and telecommunication technologies, () social factors, as life quality improvement, increase in consumption and influences of globalization, together with a process of Polish scientists ageing and their poor salaries which provoke for engaging for extra job search, (3) popularity of regional, continental and global landscape-ecology studies which would be impossible to be realized in a form of field studies, together with studies on historical landscape changes which require use of archive data. The majority of landscape research is realized without carrying out field studies. The latter remain primarily in large-scale studies, with their results presented on maps on scales of 1:2.000-1:25.000. The interdisciplinary character of landscape ecology creates their own field study methods which are built on achievements of three main groups of science: natural sciences (geography, geology, biology, chemistry, physics), social sciences (sociology, history, ethnography, archeology) and technical sciences (i.e. landscape architecture). They all can represent different spatial (points, linear - transect, areal) and temporal aspects (one-time, periodical, continual). As a result of the discipline evolution, contemporary landscape-ecology field studies will involve: (1) junior researchers (students and early-stage scientists) - aiming to empirically recognize landscape relationships and gain future competences of their interpretation based on maps, aerial images and other sources, (2) experienced scientists - aiming to fill in data gaps in large-scale studies. The situation of desktop landscape ecologists is better than it was few decades ago since field studies are not the main landmark of landscape ecology anymore. The perspectives for establishing closer relations between field and desktop studies in landscape-ecology research processes depend on application potential of this discipline for landscape or environmental planning & for other social requirements, for example the implementation of European Landscape Convention and other Polish regulations related.
